Heartburn also known as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a condition that affects the digestive system. Signs of heartburn differ from people to people for it can have different causes. But, there is still a symptom that are the same to most people these are the rising of the acids in the stomach to the esophagus. The situation wherein the muscles found in the entryway of the stomach relax causing the food that was eaten including acids and enzymes in the stomach to flow upwards to the esophagus. Such is also called acid reflux. In this article, we will find out what are the causes, symptoms and treatment for heartburn in men.
Unhealthy diet is one of the main reasons of heartburn. Too much intake of caffeine and chocolates can cause heartburn. Also, too much consumption of acidic and fatty foods can also increase the changes of heartburn. Too much citrus foods, smoking, too much alcohol, obesity and sleeping after eating are common reasons why men suffer from heart burn.
Symptoms of acid reflux may vary from one person to another. However, there are symptoms of heartburn that are found to be common in men. These symptoms are problems or difficulty in swallowing, burning sensation inside the chest that occurs shortly after eating and takes some time to disappear, pain in the chest while bending and rise of acid to the throat resulting to burning sensation with warm, sour, salty-tasting fluid. In severe cases, heartburn can cause chronic sore throat, chronic cough, asthma and chronic hoarseness.
Milk, as what is commonly believed, is not recommended for treating heartburn. Milk does provide instant relief as it travels down to the esophagus, however, with its calcium and protein content, it can stimulate the acid production more in the stomach. The most common resort for heartburn are antacids that can neutralize the production of acid in the stomach.
In order to keep heartburn from reoccurring, one must avoid foods that are extremely hot or cold, eating slowly, taking exercise, losing weight, avoiding or minimal intake of caffeine, chocolates and other carbonated drinks and avoiding stress.
Just by telling the doctor about the symptoms of the illness, he can easily determine that it is heartburn. However, your doctor can also suggest to you to undergo tests to find out how severe the illness is and so proper treatment can be provided.
